Brussels – the double capital

Brussels (the official name is the City of Brussels) is a city placed in Belgium. It is the capital of the country where live about 180,000 people. However, the majority of people know the city as the capital of the European Union because there is placed the administrative centre of the European Parliament.

The city consists of nine districts and every district is worth visiting during your stay in the capital of Belgium.

The most important sights of the city. In the centre of Brussels, in the neighbourhood of the Grand Place is placed a real landmark of the city. It is called Manneken Pis and in English it means Brussels  2Little Man Pee. It is a sculpture made of bronze that is 61 centimetres tall. The sculpture presents naked boy who is urinating into the fountain. The original version of the sculpture was designed in 1619. The symbol of the city underlines the unique sense of humour of citizens of the Brussels. Another important symbol of the city is The Cathedral of St. Micheal and St. Gudula. It is a Roman Catholic church in Gothic style located in the Central District of the city. It is quite easy to recognize because it consists of two towers and two spires that are 64 metres tall each. It is also worth to visit the interiors of the cathedral that are breathtaking and present solutions from the 16th century.

Transport possibilities. Everyone who would like to get to the city should consider travelling by plane. It is the fastest mean of transport and the city is served by The Brussels National Airport. The airport is located 12 kilometres from city centre and it serves about 23 million passengers annually. It is also the 21st busiest airport in Europe. The airport provides direct flights to European countries as well as intercontinental flights to numerous interesting destinations, such as Montreal, Atlanta, New York, Zanzibar and a lot more.
